Why We Built It.

A coat that didn’t exist.

APA is Sanskrit for water. It was the right name for a coat designed to deal with water on equal terms — not to hide from it.

Léa Stein spent her career designing outerwear for the great fashion houses of Paris and New York. She knew exactly what good craft looked like. She also knew, from six years of European winters, what a good coat needed to do.

Nothing in the market did both. So she built it.

Why We Built It.

Performance borrowed from the mountains.

Brussels. Paris. New York. Cities where it rains more days than it doesn’t — and where no coat solved the problem. The waterproof ones looked like hiking gear. The elegant ones soaked through. Léa Stein searched for a coat that performed like alpine sportswear and looked like it belonged in a client meeting. It didn’t exist. So she built it.

One coat. Both worlds. No compromise visible from the outside.

Why We Built It.

Made in Europe. Worn everywhere else.

Every APA coat is made entirely within Europe. Schoeller® weaves the membrane in Switzerland. The cut is drafted in Germany. The seam tape, stitching, and final assembly are done by hand in a French and Polish atelier. No step outsourced. No component crosses an ocean. 100% European supply chain, traceable at every metre.

Léa founded APA in 2016 with one condition — nothing compromised for cost or convenience. That condition still holds.

Why We Built It.

One coat to replace the rest.

APA launched in 2019 with three coats, each built to replace every other coat in your wardrobe. Schoeller® Nanosphere® waterproofing that never washes out. C_Change® membranes that breathe when you move. NOSO® taped seams. A hood that deploys in four seconds. All inside a silhouette clean enough for a boardroom and light enough for a carry-on.

Kickstarter backers proved the demand. Design awards confirmed the engineering. But the real proof is simpler: people stopped buying second coats.

A LEGACY OF QUALITY

The supply chain.

Every APA coat is made entirely within Europe. Fabric: Schoeller®, Switzerland. Lining: Climate-Shell, Italy and France. Hardware: Germany. Seam tape: Noso®, Italy. Final construction: partner atelier, France & Poland.

We work with family-owned factories. We chose them because of their standards. This is why the coat costs what it costs. It’s also why it lasts.

sustainable manufacturing

Sustainability for us is two-fold: it means we avoid using chemicals and materials that are harmful to people and to the planet, but also that we uphold the highest working condition standards for those who help make our products.

Specifically, we work with family-owned local factories in France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, and Poland that meet the highest requirements of working conditions. We place critical emphasis on green technologies, responsible manufacturing, good working conditions and safe products for customers.

sustainable manufacturing

We produced more Schoeller® fabric than our coats require. For most brands, that means waste. For APA, it means the Dzaino collection.

Every offcut of surplus Nanosphere® fabric is sent to Dzaino’s studio in Berlin, where it is cut and assembled by hand into waterproof travel pouches — same membrane, same hardware standard, same permanent waterproofing as the coat it came from. No new materials produced. No offcuts sent to landfill. Every metre of Schoeller® we purchase is accounted for in a finished product.

This is not a sustainability programme. It is a manufacturing decision. We bought the fabric. We use all of it.
